5 Minutes to Midnight

Posted by weehaggis on Tuesday, January 16, 2007

This recent story just caught my attention.

If you like to worry about things, then here’s something else to add to your list. Tomorrow 17th January at 14.00 hrs GMT we will be at 5 minutes to midnight. That’s 5 minutes until Armageddon, the Apocalypse, end of the world……!! The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists will be moving the “Doomsday clock”, which currently stands at 7 minutes to midnight, forward by 2 minutes.

In a statement released on Monday they said:

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists (BAS) will move the minute hand of the “Doomsday Clock” on January 17, 2007…the first such change to the Clock since February 2002. The major new step reflects growing concerns about a “Second Nuclear Age” marked by grave threats, including: nuclear ambitions in Iran and North Korea, unsecured nuclear materials in Russia and elsewhere, the continuing “launch-ready” status of 2,000 of the 25,000 nuclear weapons held by the U.S. and Russia, escalating terrorism, and new pressure from climate change for expanded civilian nuclear power that could increase proliferation risks.

Watch their ominous looking web site for the announcement….yikes. In the meantime, for a concise summary of our march to oblivion checkout wikipedia.

Maybe those tilflukstrom which you find in buildings all over Norway will come in handy after all (and not just for being used as storage cupboards) 🙂

Another flying visit back to the home country

Posted by weehaggis on Sunday, January 14, 2007

Just got back from a flying visit to Edinburgh. Quite literally it was a flying visit (out Friday and back Sunday) and it was one of those 1kr each way Ryanair cheapos. Ok, it came to a bit more than 2kr once you add in all the taxes. Don’t forget all those Ryanair extras…the wheelchair levy, credit/debit card booking fee, on-line check-in charge…. All in it came to 262kr, which is still bloody cheap, so can’t really complain 🙂

The outward flight was about 30 mins late in leaving…due to the passenger list not matching the number of passengers. The ground staff wouldn’t let the flight leave until the issue was resolved. You could see that the flight crew were getting a bit agitated as somebody from the ground staff started to go through each passenger manually checking their boarding card. If the story about cabin crew being on commission only is anything to go by, then their agitation is no surprise.

The flight back to Norway went without a hitch with the usual straight faced cabin crew. On getting off the plane when back in Torp, I wondered to myself if they would soon start to charge for a smile.

Anyway, it turned out to be a rather cheap weekend. Worked out not that much more expensive than what the Firday night out at the local would have cost, and probably ended up buying more alcohol too 🙂

Also came back with some more DVDs, which I wasn’t able to fit in my case when I was last visiting the folks. Now added WestWing Season 7, Carnivale Season 2, Frasier Season 5 and finally, Alias “Final” Season 5 to the collection. That Sidney Bristow in one mean hot kick ass babe!!

Looks like I didn’t miss much in the weather front. Landed in Prestwick to howling gales and lashing rain, and pretty much the same on arrival in Edinburgh. Didn’t let up on Saturday either. More of the same with a white knuckle ride of a landing on the return to Torp – more howling gales. On getting home, the nice fluffy snow which I’d left behind on Friday had now turned to sheet ice. Its going to be fun getting into work tomorrow 🙂

Gatecrashing on Hogmany

Posted by weehaggis on Tuesday, January 2, 2007

After a rather uneventful journey, made it back to Norway. Transfer through Heathrow was painlessly quick, although did have to hang around in treminal 4 for about 3 hours waiting for my connection back to Oslo. Now you are strictly only allowed one piece of hand baggage and everything must fit into one regulation sized bag. Of course, after security you can shop til you drop and buy as much as you can carry and then take it onto your flight. I wonder whose interests are really being looked after here???

Hogmany (or New Year’s Eve just incase you didn’t know 🙂 ) was a fun night. Got an invite to Karla’s soiree and ended up gatecrashing a kareoke party full of mad irish people (and thats the best possible type of mad). Too much fog, too much rain and too much cold put a bit of a dampner on the evening’s fireworks. Yes, there were lots, but not quite as spectacular or impressive as in pervious years. Even though the fireworks were a bit of a washout, the kareoke was a hoot. I have to say, Karla does a mean Roxanne. The video would be a surefire hit on YouTube….then there’s threat of some something extremely horrible and painful which would surely follow 🙂

Oh, and before I forget, found out some more good news while back in Scotland. Norwegian (Norways version of a low cost airline) will be starting a service to Edinburgh this April…..yipeee. No more need to rely on Rynair and backwater airports for cheap flights.
