Tallinn – jewel of the Baltic ?

Posted by weehaggis on Thursday, August 16, 2007

Tallinn is a very pretty city, the Old Town part of it at least.

A word of advice, don’t go during the summer months. The place is absolutely swarming with cruise ships full of tourists. Standing on the shore front during the afternoon I counted six cruise ships moored in the port and there was another one on its way in. Apparently this is normal every day May, through to late August/September. Virtually anywhere you go in the old town you are getting in the way of another herd of sheep following a guide with a numbered lollipop.

Apart from that, the old town is very nice, very photogenic (assuming you can get a shot without some babbling Italian OAP tourist in it) and still well worth a visit. Some friends of mine went there in winter – much better idea.

If you do go, and if you like beer, you just have to visit the Beer House. Its the only micro-brewery in Tallinn and their range of 7 home produced beers are pretty damn good. Ok, the place is made up to look like a faux Bavarian beer hall, lederhosen and all, but trust me….the beer is good. They even have tables with their own beer taps???

If you sit at a table with a beer tap, you can join the beer rally. The pub keeps a tab on how may beers you drink, and the one who downs the most in a month wins a prize. But wait, to even qualify for being considered there’s a 20 liter minimum……hmmm…..difficult. I wonder if this idea would take off in Norway….haha, that was a joke!!

It’s hot hot hot…..

Posted by weehaggis on Tuesday, August 14, 2007

I think I’ve discovered where the sun has been all summer. Its over here in Tallinn. When I left Oslo on Monday morning it was raining as per usual. Arrived in Tallinn, just an hour and a bit away by plane, to blazing sunshine and scorching heat. Ok it wasn’t quite scorching. The temperature was about 28C+, but when you’re not quite dressed for it, it feels scorching 🙂

Traveling into Tallinn from the airport I decided to play the cheapskate and get the bus. Unfortunate move. I knew I had to get off at the bus station, and thinking “bus station”…that should be easy. After a short while the driver shouts “bus station”. I could see a number of bus shelters lining the road and thought “hmmmm…..could be”. So I alighted the bus. Guess what, it wasn’t!! By the time I’d got my bearings, the bus had gone, and there I was standing like a right pillock. Turned out the situation wasn’t too dire. It was a direct road into the center, which was roughly the area where my hotel was located. Took all of about 30 mins to walk…..not too bad. Not quite…there was me checking in, dripping like the incredible melting man trying to fill in the check-in slip and……you know when you’re trying to write with a biro on wet paper…..yeeeewwwwww…..enough!!!! The receptionist, young and sweet, watched me with a smile. As she delicately picked up the blotchy sheet by the corner, I made my quick retreat to the elevator. I just hope she’s not on duty anytime over the next three days…..make mental note…..don’t wear the same shirt again 🙂
